One of the most pressing issues confronting humanity and our planet is climate change. Wetlands and Climate Change, the previous World Wetlands Day theme, has focused attention on the critical role of wetlands as a natural solution to climate change. We saw it fit as a Centre for Ecological and Sustainability advisory to speak to the general public about wetlands restoration. Wetlands, as a key component of the Nature-based Solution, play an important role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. They act as an effective carbon sink and increase community resilience to the effects of climate change by mitigating the effects of natural disasters such as floods, storm surges, and drought. Importantly, human adaptation to the effects of climate change cannot occur in the absence of wetlands. Parties are encouraged to seek opportunities to integrate Nature-based Solutions into their contributions and strategies, and to coordinate with their counterparts to elevate wetland conservation as part of their climate commitments, in order to support and elevate the efforts of Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands and the UNFCCC. This webinar expands participants' understanding of wetlands as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation/adaptation, as well as the opportunities for Contracting Parties to incorporate wetlands into their strategies. With this information, Contracting Parties will be able to incorporate wetlands into their national commitments in order to meet the targets set. Date: 03 February 2023 Time: 15:00 (SAST)
