This short course on introduction to Geographic Information Systems and mapping provide audience with the basic theoretical component and practical application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. Practical case studies will be presented to help you confront real spatial problems and design a solution using GIS. The free to download open source software package QGIS will be used to visualize, explore, analyze and map the spatial solution. Course content: GIS components, working with vector and raster data in QGIS; capabilities and applications, a QGIS tour; Coordinate systems, map projections, geo-referencing, working with projections in QGIS; Creating spatial data, digitizing in QGIS; Map design and map making, presenting data on a print map in QGIS.
